My name is iemd (or Iona if you know me in person). I'm a beyond-novice-coder who just happened to be inspired by the indieweb and set about learning to code well enough to build a site of my own.

Currently, I am studying a weird degree mixing physics and philosophy. My interest in this comes from being excited by the fundamental questions about the world and attempts to better explain it. If you are curious as to what that means I'll be writing about it on my blog along with other topics that interest me, and potentially you.

As for hobbies I enjoy listening to almost all music, love watching films good and bad, create art on occasion, enjoy reading, and love discussion.

FAQs:

✧ Where are you from?

My parents are from Wales and South Africa respectively but I grew up in Switzerland before going to England for secondary school and beyond.

✧ Why did you put amicable?

Got trolled for this but um... I think I come off as friendly or I hope I do. I think the word has a cool etymology and I like its neutrality.

✧ What is a degree in Physics & Philosophy?

The exact structure varies but it's a Bachelor of Science which attempts to answer 'how does the world work?'. You study physics and develop an understanding of the mechanical and mathematical way to model/understand observed phenomena. On top of this you learn about the specific intersection of science, physics, and philosophy. Lastly, you also choose philosophy modules and- depending on what you choose- gain perspective on how to approach big questions tackling society, the reality of time and space, ideas, politics, cognition and information, or religion. You learn thus both how to problem solve systems and what constitutes a valid convincing argument.

✧ How do those two even intersect?

For me the intersection between the two is at its heart about approaching the fundamental concepts that make up the world we live in. How does it function? What is the best method for understanding it? What is true and more importantly how are we limited in understanding the true? It's juggling abstract thinking with the complexities of observed reality. (Another angle is the history of science at its origin being a philosophical pursuit). The best, and most entertaining, answer discussing specifically philosophy OF physics I've seen is this by James Read.

✧ When did you get into coding a webstie?

I was never interested in coding (python in uni 1st year I didn't enjoy... at all). I stumbled upon the creativity and expression of personal websites through BearBlog first - which was around winter of 2025. It totally inspired me.

✧ Who do you wanna be and what to you want to do?

To live my life as a kind, principled, consistent, and patient person. I don't have a clear idea of the arc of my life right now. I pursue what I'm interested in and find strengh in being 'multidisciplinary' (especially as I am indecisive).
